Trailing 4-0 after the top of the second inning, the No. 1-seeded Monticello Magic baseball team advanced to the semifinals of the state Class AAA baseball tournament with a 5-4 win over Duluth Denfeld (16-10) this morning at the University of Minnesota's Siebert Field.
With two runs in the bottom of the second inning - and two more in the third - Isaac Frandsen tied the game on his team-leading fourth homer of the season. The homerun set the stage for the win.
The Magic (19-5) scored the winning run in the sixth when Frandsen, who reached base in all three at-bats, came home from third on a two-out single by Carson Sawatzke.
Reliever Ethan Bosacker (6-0) picked up the win with 5 1/3 innings of one-hit relief, walking one and striking out seven. He came in with two outs and the bases loaded in the second inning and induced the Hunters' cleanup hitter to ground out.
Monticello will play at noon tomorrow at Siebert Field against Benilde-St. Margaret's (no. 5 seed). The winner moves on to the state title game next Thursday at Target Field and the loser plays in the third-place game at 5 p.m. tomorrow.
Magic coach Cole Deibele said junior Thomas Van Cullin will get the start for Monticello.
