The New Mound Farmers’ Market & More will be adding extra fun to the July 27 Saturday morning market. There will be a drawing for prizes, music and activities for the kids. Stop by to help commemorate 10 years of this great addition to the Mound community.
The New Mound Farmers’ Market & More is the second market in town, following a 10-year successful market that was held in the same location 40 years ago and was spearheaded by Mary Perbix and managed by Marilyn Zolden Lemke and Cathy Stepanek. The current market began as interest in farmers’ markets around the area began to appear. All of the produce sold at the market is Minnesota grown. No wholesale produce/products are allowed.
With the desire to provide healthy, locally grown produce and offer home-based businesses, artists and crafters a place to sell their work, Perbix and three experienced vendors from other venues, planned this thriving farmers’ market. The market is a private, non-profit organization and is volunteer-managed by Perbix, Peggy Heilman, Craig Gilbertson and Jenni Gilbertson. Part of its mission statement is to give back to the community. Vendor fees are used to donate to the Food Shelf, WeCan, the school district Angel Fund assisting students with school lunch fees and other organizations as needs arise.
The market core consists of vendors who have been at the market since the very beginning. Young entrepreneurs are encouraged to sell as well. One young lady began as a pre-teen selling her baked goods and now has an established following. The youngest vendor is 5 years old and sells his iced coffee and lemonade.
Produce is abundant now, but the farmers had a difficult time of it this spring due to the weather. The market owes its success to these hard working farmers and loyal vendors, our shoppers and the City of Mound for their continued support.
The market is open from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
