A man who engaged in a high-speed chase with Forest Lake police after a shoplifting report in March has been sentenced to prison for one year and eight months, with credit for 91 days served.

The sentence for Andrew William Young, 32, of White Bear Township, was handed down June 17. He was convicted for fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle. He was originally also charged with receiving stolen property and aiding and abetting theft, but those charges were dismissed.

According to court records, police were dispatched to the Forest Lake Target store around 3:40 p.m. March 18 after being informed of a theft in progress. When they arrived, they saw the suspects get into a car that was driven by a person later identified as Young, who has had 10 theft or stolen property convictions since 2014. Young drove away at a high speed and tried to get away on Interstate Highway 35 South. Around the intersection of the highway with State Highway 96 in Vadnais Heights, Young’s car hit stop sticks deployed by police, but he continued to drive on his tire rims on County Road E until a Forest Lake officer performed a pursuit intervention technique maneuver on Young’s vehicle. Two of the other occupants tried to run on foot but were caught.

Target employees later identified Young as one of the people who stole electronics from the store. The total value of all the stolen electronics was about $980. Police also learned that the car Young was driving had been stolen.
