A 25-year-old from Chicago has been charged after allegedly botching an attempt to steal a cellphone from the Forest Lake T-Mobile store.
According to court records, Dionte Martice Smith has been charged with simple robbery in connection with the event.
On June 9, an employee reported that a man “dressed as a female” had robbed the store earlier in the day (the time of the robbery was not given in the criminal complaint). The employee said a person came into the store and asked about buying a $1,100 iPhone. When provided with the phone, the person allegedly took out what appeared to be a bottle of mace and tried to spray it at the employee who provided the phone. The robber, later identified as Smith, then ran out the door without paying for the phone and fled in a vehicle with temporary Illinois registration.
On June 11, Forest Lake police spotted a vehicle matching the description of the one Smith used in the parking lot of the Country Inn and Suites. Police contacted the hotel and surveilled the car. Smith was arrested upon leaving the building. A T-Mobile employee later picked Smith out of a photo lineup.
A Forest Lake man was put on probation last month after his conviction for domestic assault by strangulation.
According to court records, Michael Craig Haseltine was sentenced to three years of probation, time served in jail, and a $50 fine. The assault he was convicted of committing occurred on Sept. 6, 2018.
On that day around 1:45 p.m., police responded to a 911 call in the 1200 block of Fourth Street. The woman in the home officers responded to had suffered bruises to her neck, arms and fingers. She was hospitalized.
Multiple witnesses reported that the woman and Haseltine had an argument earlier in the day. After receiving treatment, the woman told police that after they argued, Haseltine would not let her leave the house, eventually grabbing her by the hair, hitting her, throwing her to the ground and choking her.
