Since 1988, mothers across the state have been permitted to fish on Mother’s Day weekend without permits. Saturday, May 7 and Sunday, May 8 are no different as the DNR will allow mothers to fish for free across the state.

The fishing opener is next weekend, but species like crappie, sunfish, catfish and native fish are allowed to be reeled up.

Regular fishing season updates can be found online at dnr.state.mn.us/fishing.index.
