On Wednesday, Dec. 29—Thursday, Dec. 30, 2021, the Elk River, Rogers and Zimmerman wrestling teams closed the calendar year 2021 with the annual Rogers Holiday Matness tournament.

Elk River finished 15th in the two-day event held at Rogers High School. The Elks won 36 of 70 matches.

Elks head coach Bryan Kulm said the Elks learned a lot about themselves during the tournament.

“There are some good teams there,” Kulm said. “We ended up landing in the middle, which is where I anticipated we would fall, but I thought we would have a couple more guys placing, but the guys that did place wrestled well.”

One of the highlights for the Elks during the Rogers Holiday Matness was senior captain Gavin Hilyar. Hilyar finished third in the 132-weight division.

“He wrestled a good tournament,” Kulm said. “It’s a tough weight class. He comes to battle every day.”

Rogers won 35 of 70 matches, while Zimmerman won 11 of its 35 matches.
