Home of the ‘Happy Sticks,’ Elk River Meats wins WCCO honor

Elk River Meats was hopping in downtown Elk River this past Friday after a WCCO report aired Oct. 12. Then again the market is always hopping on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Elk River Meats in downtown Elk River already lays claim to the Star News 2017 Readers’ Choice Award for the Best Meat Market.

It has now been awarded WCCO’s Viewers’ Choice for Best Meat Stick in Minnesota, and store owner Bob Robeck had the honor and pleasure of showing off his operation to anchor Frank Vascellaro and WCCOs viewing audience in an Oct. 12 report.

Vascellaro reported that Bob’s father, Elmer Robeck, along with his brother Ron, bought the business in 1971 when Bob was still in high school. It had been in the same spot since the turn of the century.

Early on the market took care of the farm community, and as the business has evolved it now takes care of the bedroom community it sits in and then some.

In 1975, Elmer came up with a new product and named it Happy Sticks.

Vascellaro described it as “perfectly seasoned, slow-smoked handful of goodness that couldn’t be more aptly named.”

Elk River Meats sells about 400 pounds of Happy Sticks per week.

New customers get one on their arrival, and that — along with the rest of the products the meat market has to offer — keeps them coming back.

Elk River Meats is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays.
