An elderly Big Lake Township man was found dead Monday after the lawnmower he was riding tipped over, rolled down a steep bank and landed on him in the Mississippi River, according to Sherburne County Sheriff Joel Brott.
Ralph A. Hermes, 89, was found in the river Monday afternoon by a neighbor who was reportedly checking on Hermes at his residence in the 20000 block of County Road 14. Hermes was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators believe that Hermes was on a riding mower near a 15-foot drop from the edge of the lawn down to the river bank when the riding mower tipped. Hermes was found in the river with his arm pinned underneath the mower.
