•Katie Hill and Andy Peterson were crowned homecoming queen and king at Rogers High School.

•Local leaders and veterans were still waiting for word on what community would be selected to house a new VA Community Outpatient Clinic.

•”Julie & Julia,” “The Proposal,” “All About Steve,” and “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” were some of the movies playing at Marcus Cinema in Elk River.

25 years ago

•Gov. Arne Carlson proclaimed Oct. 19, 1994, as “Elk River All Star City Day” after the city received the 1994 All Star Award from the Minnesota Department of Trade and Economic Development.

•The Elk River City Council was weighing whether to buy about an acre of land at the northeast corner of Highway 169 and 193rd Avenue for a new city-owned Northbound Liquor store. The old store was located at the northeast corner of Highway 169 and Main Street, but there was concern the left-turn access to that site was going to be eliminated.

•Sharon Bromen took over as the new president of the Elk River Area Chamber of Commerce. She succeeded Charlie Houle.

50 years ago

•Nursing home administrators from the region met at the Kemethese Motel in Elk River to discuss the future of nursing homes. One concern was the trend toward large corporations, especially hotel chains, going into the nursing home business and being absentee owners.

•New Buicks were at Elk River Motors, including the 1970 Challenger, Charger and Polara.

•An open house was to be held Sept. 27 and 28 at a three-bedroom rambler in Great River Acres near Elk River. The house was on 3.5 acres of land and selling for $24,900.

100 years ago

•Sherburne County Deputy Sheriff Ed Foley was shot and killed on a bridge in Elk River on Sept. 28, 1919. Foley was one of three officers manning a roadblock aimed at catching suspected car thieves as they came through town. One of the occupants of a Buick opened fire at the roadblock, hitting Foley.

•Elk River’s new flour mill was set to begin grinding grain and manufacturing flour in mid-October. Elk River Milling Co,. was to have the capacity for turning out 60 barrels of flour a day.

•The Elk River High School football team lost its first game of the season, 19-0. The match-up was against Cambridge.
