Both Pierz and Little Falls tennis traveled to Foley to take part in the Granite Ridge Conference Tennis Tournament, Saturday, Sept. 28.
Pierz had a strong day, placing in six-of-seven events, while the Flyers earned four place finishers.
The No. 3 doubles team of Marybeth Tautges and Kenna Otte were the lone Pioneers to earn a title. The pair won a 10-8 tiebreaking third set in the championship to win.
The Pioneers also had a pair of runner-up finishers in No. 2 doubles team Maddie Gall/Kami Athman and No. 4 singles player Mariah Kirschbaum.
Little Falls’ top finisher was freshman Beth Ahlin, who took third place in No. 3 singles.
Pierz had two third place finishers: No. 1 doubles team Abby Andrea and Katelyn Smude and Val Gall at No. 1 singles.
Gall beat Flyers senior Sadie Sue Houdek in the third place match. The match went to a tiebreaking third set, which Gall won 10-4.
Senior Halle Zupan finished fourth for the Pioneers in No. 2 singles.
Lastly, Flyers doubles teams Julia Vetch/Ashley Hagen and Jenna Athmann/Hailey McDuffee both were fifth place finishers.
Pierz’ Maddie Andrea (No. 3 singles) and Little Falls’ Claire Kimman (No. 4 singles), McKayla Geise (No. 2 singles) and Nicole Statema/Sylvia Erwin all finished 0-2 in the tournament.
Both tennis teams also played their final regular matches, Sept. 26.
Pierz shutout Long Prairie-Grey Eagle, 7-0. All seven events were won in straight sets.
Little Falls was bested 7-0 by Pequot Lakes. Pequot won all of the events in straight sets.
Both Pierz and Little Falls’ respective team sections (Little Falls 8AA, Pierz 6A) began Thursday, but results were not available by an early press time. Check back next week for results on section tennis action.
