Nancy Mathiason is an energetic woman who describes herself as “a social butterfly.”
“I can talk to anybody about anything,” she said. “People feel comfortable here.”
Speaking from her office in Belgrade, the Kensington Insurance Agency vice president, Mathiason talks about her busy life.
A native of Belgrade, Mathiason graduated from Belgrade-Elrosa High School. She was a BE cheerleader, dating Brian Mathiason, a member of the BE football team. The team had the honor of playing in the playoffs in the Metrodome, taking second place in the 1982 tournament.
“That was kind of cool to be able to cheerlead in the Dome!” she said.
After graduation in 1985, the couple was married, and she began her lifelong career in the insurance industry, first in sales in the Richmond insurance office, where she spent 4 1/2 years. She then spent 10 1/2 years in the St. Martin insurance office, and then worked for North American Insurance Agency 16 years and 11 months. Kensington Bank bought the North American Insurance Agency Dec. 1, 2018.
Brian is a rural route carrier for the U.S. Postal Service.
The move to North American Insurance made it possible for Mathiason to be closer to home, and BBE High School where sons Michael and Justin were educated and active in sports activities.
“I was in charge of the Post Prom Party for 10 years, because the kids are so far apart,” she said. “It was fun to see the kids safe and have fun on a night tragedies can happen.”
The boys are both grown now. Michael is a fifth grade teacher in the St. Cloud School District. He and wife Sarah, have daughters Julianna and Evelyn. Justin followed in his mom’s footsteps and works in the insurance industry in Shakopee.
With the empty nest, the Mathiasons moved to a home on Rice Lake near Paynesville last year. She doesn’t mind the commute and continues to be active in the Belgrade community.
Mathiason is a member of the Belgrade Commercial Club, serves on the CentraCare Health Foundation, and is a member of St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church where she volunteers for church functions.
Some Tuesdays find her delivering Meals on Wheels, a job she loves because she gets a chance to visit with seniors.
Mathiason enjoys visiting Belgrade Nursing Home, where she joins to a small group that sings for the residents.
In her spare time, Mathiason enjoys being outdoors and bow hunting with her husband and sons. “Since I had grand-babies I like to be with them rather than hunt,” she smiles.
Big Minnesota Viking fans, the Mathiason family has an annual third week of November outing to a Vikings game, around the time of Nancy and Brian’s wedding anniversary.
Mathiason has won trips to Hawaii and to Jamaica through Auto Owners Insurance. The whole family has also traveled to Florida, where the younger generation enjoyed the amusement parks.
Each winter they also take a vacation to Arizona to visit Mathiason’s parents.
She enjoys her position with Kensington Insurance Agency.
“I enjoy working with people in general,” she said. “What I like the most about it is being able to help people out,” she said. “I have had several clients who have had major losses. I help them from start to finish, bring them back to the whole.”
She likes helping customers in general. “Anybody needs help, I am the first to jump up,” she said.
Retirement is a long way off, and Mathiason’s goal is to finish out her working years in the insurance industry, because “I just love talking to people.”
After that, she will be volunteering at a hospital or hospice, or visiting nursing homes.
“My goal in life — I am supposed to be helping people,” she said.
Congratulations to Nancy Mathiason, August 2019 Woman of the Month.
