Due to a need to expand its speech and occupational therapy, and mental health services, Therapy Associates has opened a second location in downtown Cambridge.

Therapy Associates, which is owned by Lonnie Kirkendall and Naomi Plemon, opened its first location in Isanti in 2007, and provides pediatric speech therapy, occupational therapy and mental health services. Its new Cambridge location opened Sept. 3 and is located at 244 S. Main St. A ribbon-cutting celebration was held Sept. 12 by the North 65 Chamber of Commerce welcoming them to the Cambridge community.

“We were crowded and outgrowing our space at our Isanti location, and we’ve talked about expanding our business for some time,” Plemon said. “We have a lot of families coming from Cambridge, Braham, Mora and Milaca, and we are excited to offer a second location that will be little closer for them.”

Since 2007, Therapy Associates has doubled its number of patients and also added a number of staff members. Therapy Associates now has seven speech language pathologists, one occupational therapist, three occupational therapist assistants, one marriage and family therapist, one clinical social worker and an office manager.

“We are a pediatric-focused therapy clinic, and all of our therapists and pathologists are licensed and certified,” Kirkendall said. “We work with all types of disabilities, and work with patients from birth up to the age of 18. We are located in a convenient downtown location and we encourage anyone to stop in or call us for more information.”

Areas speech language pathologists can address include articulation, voice, receptive and expressive language, pragmatic/social language, stuttering and augmentative/alternative communication. Areas occupational therapists can address include gross motor, fine motor, sensory processing, self-help skills, feeding and visual perceptual skills. Areas mental health therapists can address include individual mental health diagnoses, family relationships and parenting struggles.

Therapy Associates also has a certified lactation specialist on hand that works with babies and new mothers.

Plemon and Kirkendall hired Mossworx Design Inc. out of Isanti for the remodeling of their Cambridge location.

“Our Cambridge location is conveniently located in downtown Cambridge and very conducive to learning and providing services to children and young adults,” Kirkendall said. “We have therapy rooms with a lot of natural light, we have a large gym space where patients have plenty of room to move around, we have a learn and grow space where patients can learn how to cook and plenty more. We have a very nice location in Cambridge that offers plenty of interactive space for our patients.”

Plemon, who has been a speech language pathologist for 25 years, and Kirkendall, for 19 years, pride themselves on providing the best possible care for their patients.

“At Therapy Associates, we believe in a team approach to working with our clients. Working together, both multidisciplinary and with parents and/or guardians, is the best and most efficient way to help your child learn and maintain new skills,” Plemon said. “Our therapists understand the importance of early intervention. Identifying and treating children with special needs can minimize the long term impact on the child. Treatment supports the probability of the child reaching their full potential.”

Plemon and Kirkendall are excited to be in the Cambridge community and welcome new patients.

“Everyone has been so welcoming and Marcia Westover and Matt Small with the city of Cambridge have been exceptionally easy to work with,” Kirkendall said. “We look forward to continue to providing the best possible care we can for our clients and working with our downtown business partners.”
