On Tuesday July 4th Caledonia traveled to Mayo Field in Rochester to play LaCrescent in the section finals. The Warriors were the undefeated team, so the Lancers would have to beat them twice with the winner advancing to the state tourney. LaCrescent would score a run in the first on a pair of Caledonia errors and have runners at second and third when a thunderstorm rolled in and cancelled play for the rest of the night. Both team traveled back to Rochester the next night to resume play. Pitcher Eric Augedahl would strike out the Lancer hitter in the top of the first to keep the score at 1-0. Tate Meiners would hit a one out double off the top of the fence in center field, but the Warriors couldn’t get him home, which unfortunately was a recurring theme the whole night. The Lancers would add a run in the fifth and seventh to win the first game 3-0. Meiners was 2-2 with a walk to lead the offense. Augedahl pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing 5 hits, one earned run and striking out 7. Austin Klug pitched the final 1 1/3 innings.
Game 2 was a pitchers duel with Casey Storlie pitching for the warriors and Cade MCCool for the Lancers. LaCrescent would break thru with a pair of unearned runs in the fourth. They would add one more in the sixth and two more in the seventh to win game two by a score of 5-0. Storlie thru 6 innings, allowing one earned run and striking out 7. Tate Meiners pitched the final inning.
“Both Casey and Eric pitched really well. Unfortunately our defense did not play as well as it normally does and we just couldn’t get any timely hits to push some runs across. Colby Mann did a great job behind the plate of calling pitches and blocking a lot of balls in the dirt in hot, stressful conditions for four straight hours”.
With the losses the Warriors end the season with a 19-5 record.
