You can still call him “Pastor Tom.”

However, for a while, he’ll be “Principal Tom” as well.

“My dad was a principal so I guess I had a good teacher,” joked St. John’s Lutheran pastor Tom Schultz.

Schultz is filling in at the start of the school year as part time principal after Nate Livingston left for a new position in West Salem.

“We’ve distributed a lot of the duties so it’s very, very part time,” Schultz said.

The receptionist Grace is also helping out in the principal duty department.

“She’s submitting things to the state on our behalf, enrollment numbers, things like that,” Schultz said.

School board members, teachers and parents are also leaning in while a search is being conducted for a new full-time principal.

“We will make the call out in October,” Schultz said. “Our synod has the framework and will begin searching in October. The period is from October to April.”

Livingston, along with other former principals had also taught 7th and 8th grade.

“That position is taken care of,” Schultz said.

The pastor expects that they’ll hear something back in three to four weeks after their call out.

They’ve made a few other overtures this past summer, but in both cases timing wasn’t right.

“One was a husband and wife team, but they had a significant amount of staff leave where they are now so they felt like they weren’t in a position to leave to and answer the call,” Schultz said.

Schultz is excited that the school was able to expand its three and four year old preschool this year.

“You look at space and having the right person in place,” he said. “We’re excited to be able to offer that with Maria (Felten) in place.”

In the interim, the well trained Schultz, having grown up in a household with a principal for a father, is doing what he can while St. John’s looks for the perfect person to be their next principal.
