American Legion Post 191 and Auxiliary announce their choices for this year’s Legion Boys and Girls State. The Legion will send Ethan Jacobson, son of Erica and Kevin Jacobson, to the 71st Annual Legion Boys State to be held at St. John’s University in Collegeville. The Auxiliary will send two girls to the 73rd Annual Girls State to be held at Bethel University in St. Paul, This year’s Girl Staters are Taryn Meyer, daughter of Steven and Stacey Meyer, and Moriah Babinski, daughter of Jeffrey and Tricia Babinski. Both events take place June 9-15.
Scholars to Girls and Boys State are Juniors in high school of good academic standing. The experience is a week-long training in local and state government. Citizen attendees will apply knowledge already gained through their home and school, along with knowledge provided during the week by individuals from selected governmental areas, to organize and operate their own city, county and state governments. There is no reference to existing political parties and no political propaganda. They are encouraged through participation toward a better civic behavior and appreciation of our democratic ideals, and its duties, privileges and responsibilities. A student’s participation in either of these premier programs makes a positive difference in a student’s future and is notable on college or work applications. Boys and Girls State opportunities exist nationwide to thousands of youth through their State Legion departments. Arlen Pohlman is the current Legion Post 191 Commander.
