Caledonia finished in second place at the Section 1 tournament, but will send four golfers to state. The results of the two day tournament found Caledonia just 11 shots behind Fillmore Central. The tournament was held on May 28 and 30 at the Willow Creek Golf Course in Rochester.
“We battled as best as we could these two days in very wet and sloppy conditions,” head coach Mitch Mullins said.
The first day four lowest scores for Caledonia totaled 380. Jenna Wiebke led for Caledonia with a score of 81. Vanessa Hawkins and Gina Steele tied one another with scores of 98. Ally Jilek followed them with a score of 103. Miranda Schroeder and Libby Jilek would also card tied scores, both golfing 105.
The second day of the tournament featured score improvements for some of Caledonia’s golfers. Wiebke would still posses the lowest score for Caledonia with 87. However, Ally and Libby Jilek both improved their scores. Ally golfed 98 and Libby golfed 104. Steele had the second lowest score with 99. Following her was Hawkins with a score of 100 and Miranda Schroeder with a score of 113. The four lowest scores for the second day totaled 384.
The combined score for Caledonia was 764. Fillmore Central had a combined score of 753 and finished in first place. Fillmore Central will advance as a team onto the state tournament.
“The top team, Fillmore Central advances, and we placed second,” Mullins said.
Despite the team finishing second Caledonia took four of the five individual spots that advance. The top five individuals not on the winning team advance to state.
“We took four of those spots,” Mullins said. “I am real proud of the girls.”
The individuals advancing for Caledonia are Jenna Wiebke who took second as an individual at the section tournament. Gina Steele who took fifth, Vanessa Hawkins who finished sixth, and Ally Jilek who took seventh.
“Next up is the state tournament for these individuals,” Mullins said. “We will take some days off to prepare.”
The state tournament will be on June 11 and 12 at Pebble Creek Golf Course in Becker.
