Caledonia/Spring Grove senior Jack Beardmore is headed back to the Minnesota State Boys Track & Field Meet for a third time.
There were twenty-six girls teams and 23 boys programs at the Section 1A Track and Field championships held at Paul Giel Field in Winona (May 28th & 30th). The top two athletes in each event qualified for the State Tournament, as well as those who met a State standard time, height, or distance.
Beardmore posted the fastest time in the 100 meter dash prelims (11.19 seconds). He then set a new personal record while winning the finals, breaking the tape in 10.94 seconds and earning 12 team points. The speedy senior also qualified for State in the 200 meter dash, taking second place (with a personal record time of 22.56) in the finals while earning 10 more team points.
In previous State Track Meet appearances, Beardmore earned a third-place medal in the 4 x 100 relay as a sophomore, and competed in the individual 100 meter dash as a junior, taking 10th place.
Teammate (and classmate) Nick McCabe took 10th in the Section 1A 100 meter dash preliminaries, and also took 4th in shot put (with a personal record distance of 47-10.25), earning 6 team points as a thrower. His achievement in making it to the Section Championships as both a sprinter and thrower is a rare accomplishment for any track and field athlete.
The 4x100 meter relay team featuring McCabe, freshman Reed Gordon, sophomore Brody Johnson and Beardmore finished 8th in the prelims, and 6th in the finals, earning 4 additional team points. Their posted time was the quickest of the season.
Finally, C/SG freshman Chris Pieper tied for 10th place in high jump, clearing 5-07.
In ladies events, sophomore Eliza Welscher qualified for the 100 meter dash finals with a time of 13.32. She finished 5th in those finals with a time of 12.90 - a new personal record - where the top 3 runners all qualified for the state tourney. Welscher earned 5 team points for her efforts.
Finally, the 4x100 meter relay team consisting of 8th graders Kloe Jore and Alexis Schroeder, 9th grader Alysha Heaney and Welscher took 11th place in the prelims.
Team totals found the C/SG girls tied for 24th place, while the gents tied for 11th. The State Track and Field Meet will be held June 7-8 at Hamline University in St. Paul.
