The Goddard School will open a new location in Blaine next year.
The Goddard School is a day care and early education center that seeks to prepare children ages six weeks to 6 years for social and academic success.
The new school will be at 12612 Central Ave. NE, Blaine, which has been an open lot for some time.
“We’ve always wondered what will happen to this lot, and we think it’s a good fit,” Blaine Mayor Tom Ryan said, at last month’s City Council meeting.
This will be the seventh Minnesota location for The Goddard School, which has over 500 locations nationwide. There are currently schools in Brooklyn Park, Chanhassen, Lakeville, Medina, Plymouth and Woodbury.
The Blaine location will serve 150 students. The school will start with eight to 10 employees, but is expecting to grow to as many as 30.
The Goddard School in Blaine will be open 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Children will attend the school at various times throughout the day based on age. Parents will be required to walk their children into the school, removing the need for any drop-off lanes.
The Goddard School will be on 2.48 acres of land at the corner of Ulysses Street NE and the frontage road for Highway 65. The school is located south of the Emberwood Apartments and north of Perkins restaurant.
“We know this corner is a sensitive corner from a traffic standpoint or, better said, a visibility standpoint,” said then-Planning and Community Development Director Bryan Schafer at the July meeting. “We’ve had them relocate the driveway all the way to the west, furthest away from the southeast corner ... and then will work with them on their landscape plan to make sure visibility isn’t reduced on that corner. ... I think it will be a nice addition for that part of the community.”
The day care and learning center will be 10,060 square feet with about 10 classrooms, a kitchen, multiple bathrooms, office space, 48 parking stalls and five playgrounds for various ages.
The building design includes glass, brick, stone and fiber cement board and batten, while the landscaping will have sod and artificial turf in the playground areas. All lighting on the site will be down lit and shielded to prevent glare or spill.
A conditional use permit for The Goddard School was unanimously approved by the City Council July 8.
Goddard Systems Inc. Site Development Manager Brian Johnston said the school would continue to work with the Blaine Planning Department to make sure the site’s plans don’t inhibit traffic safety.
The Goddard School will start construction this fall, once it has its site plan and building permits approved. The school will be completed sometime next year.
