King Kong is coming to Ramsey, though residents won’t see any giant apes climbing buildings.
King Kong Hobbies is moving to 6415 Highway 10 in Ramsey, in the retail complex off of Sunfish Boulevard Northwest that also houses Aurelio’s Pizza and Willy McCoy’s bar.
The hobby shop is moving from its previous location in Coon Rapids, just off of Foley Boulevard, because the license center is expanding, owner Doug Lewis said.
In late September the Anoka County Board approved the license center expansion to help with congestion at the highest-volume office in the county system, according to Director John Lenarz with the license/passport centers.
Lewis settled on the new location after looking for space in Elk River, Blaine and East Bethel. He decided Ramsey was the best location due to its accessibility and because it’s closer to where he lives. Plus, he appreciates the adjacent businesses, Lewis said.
“I love Willy McCoy’s,” he said. “It’s one of my favorite restaurants, and I’m learning to really like Aurelio’s.”
The black and white checkerboard floor also helped sell the location, because it matches the racing themes of King Kong Hobbies, Lewis said.
A soft opening is tentatively planned for Nov. 2, though Lewis was moving his stock into the location Oct. 29 so he appeared uncertain if he would make that date. A grand opening will be held at a later date.
King Kong Hobbies stocks hobby materials ranging from puzzles to plastic models, but its primary focus is radio-controlled vehicles. Helicopters, drones, planes cars and trucks are some of the types of radio-controlled devices Lewis carries.
The store also carries stock parts for hobbyists to build and modify their own machines. Lewis offers help teach repairs and run diagnostics on machines purchased from King Kong Hobbies.
“We’ll pass them tools and talk them through fixing it on their own,” Lewis said.
Lewis has owned King Kong for about 12 years. He was interested in running a hobby store since he worked at a hobby shop back in high school. While working as a contractor he met the previous owners of the shop and took over from them.
Lewis is considering adding some racing events, like indoor drone races, after he settles into the new location.
