The Anoka County UnionHerald and its staff won several awards during the annual Minnesota Newspaper Association conference in Bloomington Jan. 24-25.

The paper won first place in its size bracket for sports reporting.

In the category of general excellence the paper took third place in its bracket. It also won third for typography and design.

Sports writer Patrick Slack won second place in the sports feature category and third place in the sports photo category.

Managing editor Jonathan Young won first place in the columnist category.

The Minnesota Newspaper Association’s annual Better Newspapers Contest is judged by professionals from other state newspapers associations.
