Nearly 3,000 Fridley Public Schools students were welcomed back to school Sept. 3-4. All Hayes and Stevenson Elementary School students returned Sept. 3, as well as Fridley preschool students.

At Fridley Middle School and Fridley High School, the first day of school is a dedicated orientation day for fifth- and ninth-grade students as they transition into their new schools. All new students at the secondary level also attend Orientation Day. Returning students start school the following day.

The district says this format is designed to allow students to familiarize themselves within their new buildings, participate in activities to allow students to get to know each other, tour the school and find their classes and lockers, and follow the motions of a “mini-school day” where students experience a regular class schedule.
