The Coon Rapids Arts Commission will host nine free concerts this summer at the performance pavilion at Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park.

The Thursday Nights Live at the Dam series takes place at 7 p.m. Thursdays, rain or shine, June 6 through Aug. 8.

The 2019 lineup includes:

• June 6, The Mooners, classic rock.

• June 13, Dirty Shorts Brass Band, New Orleans brass.

• June 20, Everett Smithson Band, blues.

• June 27, The Red Letter Band, country.

• July 11, Minnesota Blue, acoustic.

• July 18, Backyard Band, rock ‘n’ roll.

• July 25, Kenny & Rick, pop.

• Aug. 1, Vinnie Rose, acoustic.

• Aug. 8, The Revolution 5, Beatles cover band.

According to Stephanie Lincoln, deputy city clerk and staff liaison to the arts commission, performers are chosen by the commission in different ways.

In some cases, commission members have seen bands play at concerts in another community or have heard “good things about a band” through word of mouth and in other cases, a band or group contacts the commission with an interest in performing at the dam, Lincoln said.

In all instances, at its monthly meetings, commission members listen to tapes or watch YouTube videos by prospective performers before making a choice, Peters said.

The 2019 lineup includes some performers from prior summer concerts or the commission’s winter series — Kenny & Rick, Backyard Band and The Mooners — while Vinnie Rose has been a popular musician at Coon Rapids Senior Center programs, she said.

There will be no concert July 4 because the annual Coon Rapids Fourth of July celebration will be taking place at Boulevard Plaza at that time.

Food and beverages will be available for purchase at the concerts and those attending are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket, according to Lincoln.

Anoka County, which operates the regional park, will provide free parking for the concert events and the commission has a golf cart to transport those people who cannot walk long distances to and from the parking lot and the performance pavilion, Lincoln said.

The concerts are sponsored by the arts commission with support from the Coon Rapids Community Strength Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization that promotes and enhances the quality of life in Coon Rapids by supporting community celebrations and events.

The arts commission, an advisory body of the Coon Rapids City Council, sponsors local cultural events and activities, including summer and winter concerts, art shows and a photography competition.
