Andover High School

Andover High School invites the community to participate in an all-school assembly 9:45-10:30 a.m. on Veterans Day, Monday, Nov. 11. The school is at 2115 Andover Blvd. NW, Andover.

Anoka American Legion

The Anoka American Legion will host a Veterans Day dinner 6-10 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at the post, 400 W. Main St., Anoka.

Cocktail hour begins at 6 p.m., followed by a chicken Parmesan dinner.

Tickets are $20 a person at the post’s pull tab booth or at the door.

Anoka High School

Anoka High School invites military veterans and the larger community to its annual Veterans Day Assembly 9:45-10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11, in the high school’s field house.

This year’s keynote speaker is Major Michael Rose of the Minnesota National Guard. Principal Mike Farley, a Navy veteran, will address the gathering, along with presentations from National Honors Society President Veda Karlsen-Heil and Student Council President Isabella Blanchard. Band, choir, and orchestra ensembles will perform multiple numbers.

Anoka High School is at 3939 Seventh Ave. N., Anoka.

Blaine High School

Blaine High School will honor current and former service members at its annual Veterans Day program 10-11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11.

The event, which is open to the public, will be in the Blaine High School Field House, located at 12555 University Ave. NE, Blaine.

The event will be emceed by Kare 11 reporter Boyd Huppert. The keynote speakers include Anoka County Sheriff James Stuart and U.S. Congressman Tom Emmer.

The ceremony will consist of an Armed Services salute, presentation of colors, a wreath-laying ceremony, recognition of Blaine High School students who have enlisted who will take a ceremonial oath, a battlefield cross ceremony followed by three rifle volleys performed by the Sgt. John Rice VFW Post 6316, Taps and the ceremonial retiring of the colors.

Music for the program will be provided by the Blaine High School Choir, Orchestra and Band.

Coon Rapids High School

Coon Rapids High School invites the community to participate in an all-school assembly 9:45-10:45 a.m. on Veterans Day, Monday, Nov. 11. The school is at 2340 Northdale Blvd NW, Coon Rapids.

Fridley Middle School

Fridley Middle School will honor veterans at its annual Veterans Day program at 2:15 Monday, Nov. 11, in the middle school front gym, 6100 W. Moore Lake Drive NE.

Middle school band and choirs will perform in addition to student and guest speakers.

Distinguished guests and veterans will be present and honored at the program.

Parents and outside guests are welcome to join. Doors open at 1:45 p.m. for seating.

Sgt. John Rice VFW Post 6316

The Sgt. John Rice VFW Post 6316 in Blaine will honor veterans Sunday, Nov. 10, with a dinner.

A social hour will start and 4 p.m., and dinner starts at 5 p.m. Sgt. John Rice VFW Post 6316 is located at 1374 109th Ave NE, Blaine.

The dinner will be held the day before Veterans Day to recognize the 60th anniversary of the post receiving its charter. Past presidents and commanders will be honored at the dinner.

Several family members of Sgt. John Rice who was a Native American war hero who was killed in action in 1950 and was returned to Sioux City, Iowa in 1951 for burial. This burial was denied because he wasn’t Caucasian. His body was taken to Winnebago lands where the tribe waited until President Harry Truman intervened and arrange his burial in Arlington National Cemetery.

Rice was a 10 year Army Native American veteran who had earned the Purple Heart and other honors during World War II and the Korean War.

St. Francis American Legion

The St. Francis Lions Club hosts its ninth annual free breakfast for veterans at the St. Francis American Legion, 3073 Bridge St., St. Francis. Monday, Nov. 11.

A breakfast buffet is 8-10:30 a.m. followed by a Veterans Day program 9:10-10:30 a.m.

The guest speaker is St. Francis Area Schools Superintendent Beth Giese, United States Army Reserve.

All are welcome. Breakfast for nonveterans is $5.

St. Francis High School

A veterans appreciation program will be 8:45-9:46 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, in the St. Francis High School gym. All are welcome.

Retired Navy Capt. Kay Bauer will speak, and there will be choir and band performances.

The school is at 3325 Bridge St. NW, St. Francis.
