A late first half run produced some drama going into the second half of the Section 7A championship held at Irondale June 5.

But the big cushion built early by Centennial, and its ability to hold possession down the stretch, proved too much to overcome as the Cougars earned a 14-7 win over Blaine to earn a repeat section title and advance back to state.

Centennial sprinted to a 6-1 lead after the first quarter, then upped its advantage to 8-1 early in the second.

The Bengals fought back, though, getting back within striking distance with a four goal spurt heading into halftime to cut the gap to 8-5.

Centennial regrouped in the third quarter, however, settling back in defensively and limiting Blaine’s offensive chances as it pulled away for the win.

Blaine finished the season with a 12-4 record, going 9-3 in the Northwest Suburban Conference. The Bengals reached the section finals by defeating Forest Lake 6-5 in the quarterfinals and Duluth 14-6 in the semifinals.
