Two people were killed Sunday morning in a two-vehicle crash on I-35 in Forest Lake at the US-8 junction.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a northbound 1999 Chevy pickup lost control, went through the median, rolled and struck a southbound 2008 Toyota Camry, killing the driver and a four-year-old passenger.
The crash was reported at 10:57 a.m. and resulted in the southbound lanes of the freeway being closed for about four hours.The man and the young boy were both dead at the scene, the State Patrol said.
The driver of the pickup was ejected from his vehicle. The 19-year-old from Wyoming was airlifted to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale in critical condition.
The names of the three victims will be released later on Monday, the State Patrol said. A passenger in the pickup, Dustin W. Covey, 20, of Wyoming, received non-life threatening injuries. Both Covey and the driver of the pickup were not wearing seat belts.
The driver of the Toyota was belted and his young passenger was secured in a child seat, the State Patrol said. Forest Lake police and Chisago County Sheriff's Office deputies assisted at the crash.
