The Animal Humane Society (http://www.hsus.org) estimates that 6-8 million dogs and cats enter shelters each year, with only half ultimately reunited with owners or adopted. One quarter are purebred dogs, animals intentionally bred for show, to improve the bloodline, or as a business endeavor. See more in Morrison County Record column by Karen Winkelman. The Winkelman family rescued two Newfoundland dogs from an over-crowded breeding facility. After much care, the two are recovering and fitting in with the family. Pictured are the two dogs with one of the Winkelman family members (from left): Zeek, Vincent and Betty Bop.
