St. Paul, MN -- To help address the growing need for energy assistance in Minnesota, the Carl and Eloise Pohlad Family Foundation is providing up to $1 million to the state’s Reach Out for Warmth Program.
Created by Minnesota law, Reach Out for Warmth provides financial assistance to low-income households struggling with energy costs. It allows some flexibility to serve people who may not qualify for the traditional energy assistance. In 2009, the program provided assistance to more 3,200 households in Minnesota. Reach Out for Warmth is administered by the Minnesota Department of Commerce’s Office of Energy Security.
“These funds will help more Minnesotans afford the cost of heating their homes during these particularly cold months,” said John Harvanko, director of the Office of Energy Assistance Programs at the Department of Commerce.
Reach Out for Warmth operates with local philanthropic and federal money. Individuals and businesses make donations that are received by local energy assistance service providers. Contributions are eligible for a two-to-one federal funds match, allowing Minnesotans to help their neighbors directly and attract additional resources to their local communities through their generosity.
Pohlad Family Foundation Funds are available to each of the 37 energy assistance service providers that work with eligible Minnesota households to distribute the funds. All 37 providers have applied for funds. Once approved, providers receive distributions in two payments. The first distribution will provide a total of $500,000. Service providers can request a second donation after the first allocation is used. Service providers will apply to the Department of Commerce for matching federal funds.
“Because of the high state of unemployment and lost benefits, there is a greater need to help families today,” said Terry Egge, executive director of the Pohlad Foundation. “Reach Out for Warmth reaches a part of the population that may not have access to another program.”
The Carl and Eloise Pohlad Family Foundation started in 1995 with a mission to improve the lives of economically disadvantaged children and youth and to participate in projects that positively impact the quality of life in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area.
