House passes transportation bill, gas tax included

Supporters of the House transportation finance bill argue a gubernatorial veto is not inescapable - things can still be worked out.

But some believe it's time for the governor to act.

"It's beholden for him (Gov. Tim Pawlenty) to make some move if he's at all interested in this," said Rep. Ron Erhardt, R-Edina, talking about the upcoming transportation conference committee with the Senate.

Senate passes transportation bill with gas tax increase

The Senate DFL transportation bill lacks a political accessory - airbags.

The Senate approved the bill, which contains a ten-cent gas tax increase and metro sales tax provision, Friday (March 23) afternoon on a 42-24 vote.

"This is the Mount Everest of all problems the State of Minnesota is facing," said Senate Transportation Chair Sen. Steve Murphy, DFL-Red Wing, of transportation.

But Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty is set to veto any transportation bill containing tax increases.

Rosie Swale Pope, 60, lost her husband, Clive Pope, to prostate cancer in 2002. She feels that if he had taken the time to see the doctor and be screened for the disease, he would still be with her today.

Senate higher education bill does not provide for student tuition freeze

Minnesota State College and University (MnSCU) students stood outside the Capitol this winter, gripping signs in mittened hands demanding a tuition freeze.

But the Senate higher education bill passed on Thursday (March 22) doesn't provide it.
