Congressmen Walz, Paulsen continue to push nuclear plant construction
In a rare bipartisan display between members of Congress, Democratic 1st District Rep. Tim Walz and Republican 3rd District Rep. Erik Paulsen put out a joint press release calling for Minnesota lawmakers to lift the state’s ban on the construction of new nuclear power plants.
“Without action, Minnesota will be left behind as other states across the country move forward towards a new energy future,” said the lawmakers.
“As Minnesota legislators return to Saint Paul this week, we urge them to overturn the moratorium and give Minnesota a seat at the table in addressing the energy challenges we face,” they said.
Recently both lawmakers appeared at the Capitol together to push for the removal of the ban. At least one longtime Capitol reporter could not remember the last time a Republican and Democratic member of Congress by choice appeared together at the Capitol.
One area lawmaker to watch on the moratorium repeal is Rep. Joyce Peppin, R-Rogers, who has pushed the initiative in the House.
Somewhat oddly, the House, not the Senate, voted to keep the moratorium in place last year.
The repeal passed the Senate on a 42 to 24 vote.
