Be careful placing a bet
The big budget deficit of 2003 generated a series of gambling proposals, and indeed Gov. Tim Pawlenty back in those days spoke of altering the contours of gaming in the state.
Expect more gaming proposals now.
But the governor, whose attempt at altering the balance between Indian and state gaming proved to be one of his biggest public setbacks, recently indicated that he was not interesting in messing with gaming again.
Today (Jan. 9) both Senate and House leaders indicated that shepherding a gaming bill — say slot machines in bars — through the Capitol won’t be easy.
House Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher, DFL-Minneapolis, deemed it “unlikely” in the current makeup of the Legislature.
Assistant Senate Majority Leader Tarryl Clark, DFL-St. Cloud, struck the similar tone.
