Pets will be pampered soon in Blaine if their owners decide to board them at Stone Mountain Pet Lodge, an upscale place planned for pooches or kitties when pet owners leave town.

Blaine City Council Thursday approved a preliminary plat to subdivide 22.7 acres into two lots to be known as Larson's Estates. The kennel is planned for 101th Avenue and Radisson Road N.E.

It's a place that you drive by and see deer and turkeys "and you kind of hope it will stay that way forever," said Bryan Schafer, planning director. But the property owners have reached an agreement with developers.

The council also granted a conditional use permit to operate a boarding kennel, an associated retail business and an on-site apartment for a night watchman as a second part of the resolution.
Schafer said the proposed pet lodge does not look like a kennel.

"I thought it looked like the TPC clubhouse," he said.

The Blaine airport is to the south of the proposed buildings, which "is about as good of a site as you can find" for a kennel, Schafer said.

Lot one will be divided into 12.4 acres, with 4.9 of the acres being upland. An existing home and several detached structures are currently located on lot one.

Lot two, the proposed site of the kennel, will be 10.3 acres, with 4.45 acres being upland.

The proposed kennel will be able to board 200 dogs and 75 cats. An administrative building will face Radisson Road. The main building will include a retail area, cat kennel, training auditorium, grooming area and an intake/outtake room. A 9,000 square-foot kennel will be built behind the main building. Dogs will have their own 4- by 6-foot indoor kennels and 4- by 12-foot outdoor kennels.

Cats will also have individual kennels and receive one-on-one attention daily in an indoor area.

A 24-hour on site manager will stay on premise in a 1,600 square-foot apartment.

The kennel hours will be 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday. It will be closed on Sunday.

Applicant David Larson told council members he is excited to open the pet lodge in Blaine.

"It's intended to be an upscale, top end facility," he said.

Council approved parts one and two of the resolution 7-0.
